The
Right Man for the Job
Short
Film Review

Ominous
military inspired music and government-issue sets create an
atmosphere of threat in filmmaker JD Cochran's ten-minute
short, The
Right Man for the Job, winner
of Jamaica's Jamerican Film Festival writing award. Appropriate
as the job is that of a hired gun for the land of the
free.
Three topflight recruits: Cooper, Sorenson, and Thompson,
are called in to compete for one elite CIA assassin position.
The final test is a diabolical way of determining the potential
operative's ability to follow instructions, regardless of
the circumstances. The test is spousal elimination.
The first two contenders fail. Outraged, Sorenson refuses
outright; Thompson simply can't go through with it. Much to
the horrified surprise of the heretofore implacable superiors,
the third candidate performs admirablygoing above and
beyond the call of duty.
COOPER:
You didn't tell me that the gun
was loaded with blanks. I had to beat the son-of-a-bitch to
death with the chair. Agent
Cooper's wink and sly smile gives the short its satiric spin.
For the right man for the job is a woman.
The story and cinematic elements render this film terrifically
taut. But what I particularly appreciate, is the in-your-face
feminism for the new millennium that still adheres to a 50s
M.R.S. mentality. Early on, Agent Cooper announces she's "right
on time." Apparently, so is Mr. Cochran.
The Right Man for the Job is
currently touring the film festival circuit, and can also
be viewed on IFILM:
